Calculation Methodology & Sources

This calculator returns 3 reference points instead of pretending there is one perfect distance. Personal comfort, eyesight, content, room lighting, and seating layout still matter.

Assumptions

  • Screen aspect ratio: 16:9.
  • TV size means diagonal screen size, excluding the bezel.
  • Viewing distance is measured from your eyes to the screen.
  • Visual-acuity estimates assume approximately 20/20 vision and 1 arcminute per pixel.

Field-of-View Formula

For a 16:9 display, screen width is calculated from its diagonal. Distance then follows:

width = diagonal × 16 / √(16² + 9²)
distance = width / (2 × tan(fieldOfView / 2))

The calculator uses 40° for its immersive result and 30° for its relaxed result. Reverse mode rearranges the same geometry to solve for screen diagonal.

Resolution & Pixel Visibility

Resolution does not change screen geometry. It changes how close you can sit before individual pixels may become visible. The estimate uses horizontal pixel count: 1280, 1920, 3840, or 7680.

Sources & Limitations

Standards and human vision are more nuanced than a calculator. Use results as a starting range, then adjust for comfort. No manufacturer or standards body has endorsed this website.
